Legal services Pay...


  • In private firms, trainee or uncertificated bailiffs may earn around £13,000 a year and certificated bailiffs may earn between £16,000 and £25,000 a year.
  • In the court service bailiffs may earn around £20,000.
  • Fully certificated and experienced enforcement bailiffs could potentially earn up to £50,000 a year or more.


  • During training (pupillage) barristers earn around £10,000 a year.
  • Qualified, self-employed barristers earn between £25,000 and £300,000 a year. However, earnings vary considerably depending on experience and reputation and some may earn significantly more than this.
  • In the CPS, barristers can earn between £29,000 and £80,000.

 Court administration officers

  • Starting salaries may be around £15,000 a year.
  • With experience, this may rise to over £22,000 a year and after promotion, it may be possible to earn up to £28,000 a year.

 Legal Executives

  • Trainee legal executives may earn between £15,000 and £25,000 a year.
  • Fully qualified legal executives may earn between £25,000 and £45,000 a year and the most senior legal executives in large cities may earn over £60,000 a year.


  • Starting salaries for paralegals range from £14,000 to £25,000 a year.
  • Average salaries for experienced staff are between £25,000 and £40,000 a year and a senior paralegal may earn up to £70,000 a year.


  • The Solicitors Regulation Authority currently recommends a minimum starting salary of £16,940 a year outside London, for trainee solicitors but many firms offer more. Large, prestigious firms may offer up to £38,000.
  • Qualified solicitors can earn between around £25,000 and £60,000 a year and a partner in a large firm or the head of an in-house legal department may earn well over £150,000 a year.

Political researchers

  • Salaries start from around £16,000 a year.
  • After a year's experience, earnings can rise to around £20,000 and earnings of between £27,000 and £35,000 a year are possible.

Political/constituency organisers

  • Political/constituency organisers may earn around £19,000 to £25,000 a year. With experience this may rise to around £31,000.
  • National campaign officers may earn around £37,000.


  • Local Councillors don't receive a salary, but do get an allowance of around £10,000, plus expenses.
  • MPs earn £65,738 a year and MEPs earn around £80,000 a year.
  • Parliamentary ministers can earn between around £80,000 and £145,000 a year.
